Time Out

Communication Design
Project Overview
Create a visual identity and graphic elements to promote a film event for American director Spike Lee. We were proposed to make a foldable flyer, a poster with the program, and a banner for facebook. In addition, we also created signage for the outside of the theatre, and merchandising (t-shirt, pin, and something of our own). As a start, I did some research on Spike Lee, emphasising the principles that make his directing style recognisable. Examples would be the use of double trolley, vibrant colors, the repetition of "Wake up!", the breaking of the fourth wall, etc. With all this knowledge in mind, I chose the key word "power", which refers to Spike Lee's need to pass on strong and real messages.
In the final version, I brought the idea of the newspaper to the forefront. The newspaper as a means of communication has immense power, whether online or physical, which has to do with the general theme I chose for the proposal. In the title, I made it look like it is jumping off the page, trying to bring the idea of breaking the fourth wall. I chose vibrant colors and typefaces created in the style of the 80s. For the basis of the illustration, I drew Spike Lee based on a photograph taken at the 2019 Oscars. I chose to put the calendar on the back page, at the bottom, because it is easier to find when folded. The layout of the poster and the visual identity of the pamphlet was inspired by Brooklyn newspapers from the 40's, that I found during my research about the place.

This merchandising item was made on the basis that all of the films directed by Spike Lee are credited as "A Spike Lee Joint". In my research I found out that he is known to be against drug usage, making this contradictory if viewed literally. What I have developed could be more considered a "joint for the mind". Each joint paper has a quote from one of the 16 movies, with 16 sheets in total. I tried my best to choose quotes that would instigate a person to think about what they were reading, leading them to a deeper conclusion. The lettering made for "Spike Lee Joint" was based on the lettering that appears in the credits scene of "She's Gotta Have It". In addition, I made a keychain with a clipper I saw in some of his movies, the T-shirt and 3 pins.
